HUMANE MODERNISM: The Architecture of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson

Karl Backus, AIA and Greg Mottola, AIA principals based in the San Francisco office of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, an architecture, planning and interiors firm will present four case studies that illustrate the firm’s design philosophy: one creative workplace, one urban retail, one academic, and one residence.

Karl A. Backus joined Bohlin Cywinski Jackson in 1983 and worked in the Pittsburgh office for nearly 14 years before establishing the practice’s San Francisco office to design Pixar’s campus in Emeryville, which is held as a model for creative workplace architecture in the entertainment industry.  Karl has continued to design Apple Stores in major cities worldwide, including the well-known Fifth Avenue cube in New York that recently surpassed the Statue of Liberty as a landmark.  Additionally, Karl focuses both on creative work environments with the recently completed Digital Arts Research Center at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the phase two buildings of Disney’s Grand Central Creative Campus in Glendale.

Gregory R. Mottola merges sustainable design with highly functional environments providing an enhanced quality of life for the inhabitants. He is keenly interested in the tectonics of building and designing for the evolving nature of technology. Greg joined Bohlin Cywinski Jackson in 1990, spending time in the firm’s Pittsburgh and Philadelphia offices before relocating to the Bay Area in 2003.  Notable local projects include Macromedia Headquarters (now Adobe San Francisco). His approach is exemplified in Mills College Graduate School of Business, which celebrated the school’s commitment to social responsibility and the Creekside residence, which carefully situates a home for a family and their art collection. Currently, Greg serves as Principal in Charge for the new civic center complex now under construction for the City of Newport Beach, California and for a new residential conference center and faculty club at UCLA.
