Craig Hartman & Cesar Rubio

Linden Tree presentation: April 9th, 2008 (at) 7:00 pm
Craig Hartman, FAIA, of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and architectural photographer Cesar Rubio will present two perspectives on the new Cathedral of Christ the Light, which will open this September. Located on Oakland’s Lake Merritt, the Cathedral seeks to create a 21st Century architecture that will ennoble and inspire through the use of light, material and form, and convey an inclusive statement of welcome and openness—an architectural expression of both spiritual and civic renewal for the City of Oakland. Craig has led SOM’s multidisciplinary team in realizing the Cathedral’s design. For the past year, Cesar has documented the Cathedral’s construction.
Craig W. Hartman, FAIA, is partner in charge of design for the San Francisco office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP. His work in the United States, Europe, and Asia ranges from entire urban districts to singular works of commercial, civic, and cultural architecture and is consistently sympathetic to issues of contemporary place and time as well as the sustainability of urban and natural ecologies. Hartman’s projects, such as Oakland’s Cathedral of Christ the Light, the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, Harvard University’s Northwest Science Center and San Francisco’s International Terminal, St. Regis Museum Tower, 101 Second Street and Treasure Island have been featured in international publications and exhibitions. His work has been recognized with over 60 awards for design which, in addition to American Institute of Architecture awards for environmental sustainability at Treasure Island and the University of California, Merced, includes Gold LEED Certifications for UC Merced’s Library and Central Plant. He has served as an invited critic and visiting faculty member at schools of architecture, and lectures internationally. In 2001, he became the youngest recipient of the Maybeck Award, an award presented periodically by the California Chapter of the AIA to an individual in recognition of “lifetime achievement in architectural design.”
Cesar Rubio, a San Francisco-based photographer, has been documenting the work of architects and designers for 14 years, using an approach informed by his early studio work and a life-long love of motion pictures. His photos have appeared in Architectural Record, Interior Design, Metropolis, Contract, New York Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle Magazine, among others. His work also has been featured in two SFMOMA exhibitions—"Icons: Magnets of Meaning" and "Railway Spine"—as well as at the AIA San Francisco Gallery.
